About Joe

View from the campsite at Cooper Lake

Well, first of all, I love the Pacific Northwest.  I got here in 1995 from L.A. and haven’t looked back.  (I was there recently and the place is bumper to bumper traffic for miles!)  The picture on the opening page of this website, and above, is the view from a campsite I go to with a good friend each summer.  We paddle the canoe across to this choice site and enjoy that view for a few days…….and so, now, you might ask, “That’s good…now why is it you are doing workshops?”

Good question!

I was a lawyer for more than 35 years – with the last 20 of them practicing   family law. More recently, I have devoted my professional life to individual and couples therapy. Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy is an enormously rich and rewarding work and I am lucky to experience it as a true calling.  However, all the while – when I was a lawyer and now as a therapist – I have been a teacher.

I have taught in law schools and I have taught in masters degree therapy programs.  I have spoken at statewide family law conferences and to therapists’ organizations and I have provided continuing professional education workshops to lawyers and therapists in the hundreds.  You can get a better idea of my experience by viewing this page on my website.  Also, if you are so inclined, you can check out the feedback by participants and conference organizers on this page.
